Covid-19 how impacted our youth:

We heard about COVID-19 in December 2019 while we were spending our Christmas in a resort in Connecticut. By February, a coworker died suddenly, and then a few weeks later we found out that he died of  COVID-19.  On March 13, 2020, I remember it like it was yesterday, we were forced to send students home with a Chromebook and their books. Two hours before dismissal, 560 students were sent home and were told to wait for directions from us. Everyone went into a panic, teachers without much technology knowledge were told to begin teaching their classes in a virtual google classroom. Parents were frustrated too, because most of them do not have internet at home nor the skills to use a computer and help their kids with the assignments. This became an issue. Our families reported that their children learned less since the beginning of the pandemic, because of the transition from classroom to online/distance learning during lockdown. Despite their efforts to continue studying, more t...

FIELD POST MARCH 3,2020

My mentees met with me at the Met last week we review the Hopkins Report and also we discussed about the survey, how to create the survey questionnaire and also when is  good time to meet and follow up. Draft: **All Questions Do Not Have To Be Answered If The Student Is Uncomfortable**  First and Last Name: School: Grade: Do You  Identify As A Student Of Color? Do You Identify With A Disability? Do You Identify Within The LGBT+? **Hi, my name is Michy. My name is Ange. We’re part of YARI, a youth research project based on educational justice. We are very curious and interested in knowing how Providence schools treat students, especially minority students.** Do you believe your school supports you educationally and as a person? What support system do you believe needs to be incorporated into your school?  What’s your opinion on how teachers teach and treat you in your school? Do you believe teachers in your school can improve themselves and how? Have...

CarinaM----Critical Reading/Reflection FEB.24

Highlight of my readings: DisCrit recognizes the shifting boundary between normal and ab-normal DisCrit explores ways in which both race and ability are socially constructed and interdependent Youth harmed by  intersectionality  "do not fit" How can we expand our knowledge or understanding of race and dis/ability? K-12 schools  often separate hallways or even buildings removed from the rest of students. Also curriculum and instruction in schools are often detached from special education Race and dis/ability have been used to marginalize particular group and society Solutions; engaging in dialogue to potentially transform inequities in our education system to avoid fall through the cracks No child left behind act, privatizations  of public education, teachers tied to student test scores Draw attention to those communities marginalized by dominant communities Me ntoring approach to impact a healthy support- outcomes of children and families Building relati...

FIELD POST FEB.17-CARINA-MICHI-ANGEL

Michi and Angel are submitting and meeting all the deadlines with YARI.  They did not have time to review the assignment I have recommended it for them last week: About the Hopkins report and the students bills of rights. I sent the links again to them for reviewing and to narrow it down for our research project and to create a questionnaire. Some of the important parts of our conversation were about quantitative-qualitative research tips:  They  already   have  a topic, now they will identifying the literature, identifying  an issue to highlight as a purpose for the study. They will coordinate questions to  investigate  about the study, also they will provide me some dates to begin the students interview process at my school on a Friday morning. F ollow by framing research hypotheses, o utline the research design and  d escribe the procedures for data collection and data analyses.

Field Post-Feb.10(Learning-Visual/Written)

This class and the  YARI project will support, help, develop, and offer another opportunity for us to help the underserved. We can be in their shoes, brainstorm together and find alternative forms of teaching, learning, adapting, creating a  space where everyone can feel accepted and normal.  With an awareness of intersectionality, we can better acknowledge the differences among us and accept each other so we can move forward.  My mentees are high spirited and super smart Angel and Mich. We shared about ourselves and discussed our journey maps . I would love to be the guide that will provide additional data points, suggestions and support  that will help them navigate their project as best as possible. They already have a topic: Why Providence Schools are failing? Focusing on Disability,  Minority, and LGBTQ.  I suggested to review the Hopkins Report and also they will review the Student Bill of Rights that was created several years ago in...

Critical Reading-Writing Assigment Week Feb.10

Intersectionality  is a new term for me but its definition is very familiar  and  uncomfortable. Everyone of us at some point have experienced Intersectionality.  I have experience it myself and witnessed it from others when it comes to the struggle  with gender equality, racial justice, and disability. We are so used to being labeled and stereotyped, is like we are driving in cruise control, very passive and we do not notice it.  The environment in our work place contributes to the segregation in some cases; and makes us be part of  the labeling without seeing. In my case for example, by creating schools and programs just for newcomers, having sheltered classroom, and also secluded areas for specific LD groups. My question is.. Are we helping and supporting our youth? Am I doing the right thing? Or are we just following the rules, and norms that others have already established without asking ourselves...
